In this study, the air friction from a V-shape coil bank as well as a slab coil from the coil bank was measured at a range of face velocities from 100 to 1000 FPM (0.51 to 5.08m/s) in an open environment. The angle of the V-shape’s apex was measured at 15 to 60 deg. The results were then compared with those of a slab coil. In general, higher face velocity caused higher air friction, as did increasing the apex angle’s acuteness.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending and presenting at the 20^th annual International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference at Purdue University. The event, organized by Herrick Labs, is a biannual event where academics, national laboratories, and representatives from various industries gather to hear technical presentations, network with colleagues, see introductions of new technology, and more.

When moist air passes through a cooling coil, the potential exists for that moisture to condense on the coil's surface. The temperature at which that occurs is known as the condensing temperature or the dew point.

When condensation occurs, the temperature of the resulting condensate is known as the condensate temperature, often called wet-bulb temperature. While these terms are frequently used interchangeably, the results of a recent study conducted by SRC’s R&D team could indicate that the value for each is not always the same.

Interlaced circuiting of heat exchanger tubes is an effective way to make heat transfer equipment more versatile and adaptable to variable conditions. But, in my experience, industry knowledge of interlaced circuiting’s impact on coil performance at different load conditions is often overly conservative or incomplete. Low-temperature heat transfer applications regularly use anti-freezing agents like propylene glycol (PG) to enable lower-temp operation. However, at very low ambient temps, properly calculating critical fluid properties like viscosity, fluid velocity, and their impacts on heat transfer becomes more complex. This post will analyze the correlation among those properties at low ambient temperatures and provide guidance for how to best model a coil’s performance at such conditions.

We’re super excited to announce that we’ve validated the performance ratings for R-449A and R-448A condensers in Enterprise, our coil selection software. We believe the condenser coil performance model we’ve developed is the most comprehensive and accurate of its kind in the industry.

We wanted to use this post to briefly explain our testing methodology to our users. We’ll also touch on why performance modeling for these refrigerants has been challenging in the past, and how we plan to improve our model over time.
